Star Wars The Rise of SkyWalker (2019 JJ Abrams)

It was quite the experience getting to see this film in Las Vegas on my birthday. There was 19 of us and we took all the last row of seats plus half the row in front of us. The theatre had these awesome reclining seats with heaters. Go figure.

So how do I rate the movie. I can often judge a movie by how many times I closed my eyes and drift off. I counted two times in this film. It was a bit boring. It seemed to have a lot of chase scenes, laser fights, and oh oh…we better get going. Rinse and repeat.

I got confused as to some of the plot. In true fashion of all Star Wars movies, the force of the Jedi wins, and the bad dudes get blown out of space.

In some ways I am sad to see these movies end. I have been with them since the year we got married in 1977. But it is time to bury the story and come up with something fresh. Like a new Star Trek Movie….just kidding.

Knifes Out ( 2019, Rian Johnson)

After some convincing, my wife agreed to come and see this movie. I attempted to explain the plot and that we had seen the previews, but she seemed unimpressed. That opinion certainly changed by the time we both left the theatre.

This movie was one of the best murder mysteries we have seen in a long time. Usually by mid way through the movie , like The Good Liar, my wife is whispering the right final outcome. But, this one had us both stumped.

It seemed mid way through the movie the director gave us all the answers. It appeared the movie had peaked. It only got more intense.

The acting was great with a cast of well know actors. Jamie Lee Curtis (who has really aged), Daniel Craig, Chris Evans to mention a few. They all meshed together. Run, don’t walk, to see this one folks.

Frozen II. (2019, Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck)

I often don’t see animated movies till they are on the little screen. Tonight though, we had a family outing and I didn’t want to be left out.

I am glad I went. This was an excellent movie. As my grandson Drew said, this version had a deeper story line than the first one. Of course, the music was also new, but the music seemed richer and more entertaining.

I was mesmerized by the animation. We have come a long way since Bug’s Bunny cartoons. What a privilege to be able to take in all this technology, especially in 3D.

By the way, in my opinion Olaf was the star! He is so adorable.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood (2019, Marielle Heller)

I honestly enjoyed “Won’t you be my Neighbour” last year. So, this year, I was anxious to see one of my favourite actors Tom Hanks play the role of Mr. Rogers.

This movie was not what I was expecting. Don’t get me wrong. Tom Hanks was perfect in this role. You soon forget that he in fact isn’t Fred Rogers. Yet, the plot especially slow and boring. A better name for the film would have been “Mr. Rogers Analysis This!!” Boys and girls, can you say “Valium!”

I now realize though, my big wardrobe of cardigan sweaters now needs a bright red and green one.

The Good Liar (2019, Bill Condon)

In today’s vernacular, this movie will definitely appeal to the “Ok, Boomer” audience. All my movie viewing team and myself, loved this movie.

I have been a fan of Dame Helen Mirren since 1986 when she was in one of my favourite movies “The Mosquito Coast”. And of course, she was perfect in her role in “The Queen” which gave her an Oscar. She was a major draw for me to see this movie. She did not disappoint.

This flic keeps you awake right to the end. It is “The Colonel Mustard in the library with the knife” type of movie. You start to figure something is fishy, about the half way mark. My wife whispered her suspicion earlier, but I was still in denial.

My only disappointment tonight was the lack of a full theatre tonight. Trust me, you will like this movie. A four popcorn bag review.

Doctor Sleep (2019,Mike Flanagan)

Being a constant reader of Stephen King, I had to see this movie. I loved the Shining and more recently loved the book for this movie. Note: not a good book to read while living in a motor home.

Ewan McGregor played the role of Danny Torrance like I envisioned in the book. The movie certainly had some gaps that seem to always pop up with a King adaptation.

The movie though, was entertaining. It rates high on the scary chart. Not big stretch though. The sound tract has a loud heartbeat that intensifies in the right moments.

My negative comment deals with the death of young kid. It was way too intense for me. I was going to let it influence my rating, but being fair, the movie was that good. My wife reminded me, that King unfortunately often goes after the kids. It still sucks though.

This movie is not one for the squeamish.

JoJo Rabbit (2019, Taika Waititi)

I saw the previews for this movie several weeks ago, and I put it on my list to see. We are in the big city this weekend, and took advantage of seeing it for a matinee. I doubt our local cineplex will be showing this one for awhile.

The story was a funny/sad satire of Hitler’s youth towards the end of WWII. The main character wanted so hard to be a good Nazi, but you watch it fall apart. The “Anne Frank” side story changed his whole perspective. JoJo’s imaginary friend Adolph Hitler was nothing you would expect.

The innocents of youth, proves no matter how hard you try, you can’t rush a child into adulthood. My favourite quote from JoJo’s friend Yorki (who was amazing by the way) said: “I just want to go home. I need a cuddle”

I recommend with four bags of popcorn,

The Terminator: Dark Fate (2019 Tim Miller)

Gabriel Luna as the Rev 9; Ectoskeleton, left, and Endoskeleton, right, star in Skydance Productions and Paramount Pictures’ “TERMINATOR: DARK FATE.”

Okay to catch you up…here is the filmography of the Terminator Movies

Oct 1984 – The Terminator – Director James Cameron.

July 1991- Terminator 2: Judgement Day – Director James Cameron

July 2003- Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines – Director Jonathon Mastow

May 2009 – Terminator Salvation- Director McG

July 2015 – Terminator Genisys- Director Alan Taylor

And now 35 years later we have our newest edition. I must confess I have seen them all, and keep asking myself, “how is Arnold still alive?”. Like all the other editions, this one did not disappoint.

The action scenes were amazing. Entertainment plus. This film still has the same format as all the others. One must kill somebody that is going to help change the future, fought by naked n’er do wells who can’t be destroyed. Not an Oscar contender, but well worth a pricy movie ticket.

Judy (2019, Rupert Goold)

You could tell by the age of the audience coming to see this movie tonight, this story was not intended for the under 50 population.

Old enough to remember Judy Garland, I was curious to see how they would portray er life. To get the true sadness of her life, it was well portrayed with flashbacks of her younger self on the set of filming Wizard of Oz. And that is where her personal hell began. It was amazing that she lived as long as she did.

Renee Zellweger was perfect for this role. There were times in the movie, that you forget that she isn’t the real Judy Garland. This will be my first Oscar vote for best Actress. The film was very depressing and at times slow, but hands off to Renee for making it a movie to remember for a long time.

Parasite (2019,Bong Jo Hoo)

I had some concerns about seeing a movie with all sub-titles. On top of that there wasn’t a lot of details on the advertising. Rumour has it that it is the Best Movie of the Decade. With only one day left in Toronto, and assuming my home town won’t have this one out (if ever) for a long time, we headed to a cineplex.

WOW!!! I am still in shock. This movie was incredible. The best movie I have seen this year. A dark comedy at first, it takes so many twists and turns, I was very vocal throughout the film. I became very involved with the characters and story line. It was a social commentary on classes of society, but I won’t reveal anymore. My favourite quote from the movie was “The best plan is no plan at all. It saves getting upset when it all fails”. This will all make sense when you MUST see the film. Of course nothing but top marks for this one.
