The Kitchen (2019, Andre Berloff)

Another movie we both waited to see at the Movie Mill to not spend the big bucks. I had great hopes for this movie, being a fan of Melissa McCarthy and Elizabeth Moss. Unfortunately, this was a bomb. Even after Pat had to clarify some plot lines that I missed, I still couldn’t see how three down trodden mob housewives, end up running all of Hells Kitchen in New York. It just seemed unrealistic….even knowing it is fiction. The story was way too depressing. I hated seeing New York in the 70’s when it was so dirty, gritty and violent. It isn’t the city I came to really love when we visited a few years ago.

This is the NYC I remember.

This movie only rated one bag of popcorn. I hope I see a 5 bag movie soon.

The Farewell (2019, Lulu Wang)

I was excited to use my “new” review site tonight. Pat talked about this movie a few days ago and I went along with her decision. This flick got really high reviews so I said why not. I didn’t realize that I was going to have to read the English sub-titles 90% of the movie..nothing wrong with that, but after a really tough week at work, I was more in the mood for an “Angel Has Fallen” movie…

I certainly was educated on Chinese family life…. wow do they eat a lot. I would describe this movie as one you would be forced to watch in Film School. Very artsy which I’m sure gave it high ratings. . A block buster film this is not. And to top it all off…(caution spoiler next) Grandma never died

Welcome to the new and improved “Movie Reviews by Johnny”

Starting with my next review, you will see a new format for my Movie Reviews. Thanks to my very creative son Paul and daughter-in-law Ronnie, I now have new graphics and a new Blog page. Posting my blogs on WordPress with automatic links to FB and Twitter, will give me better access, to images, videos and format. My new rating system will be changing from Thumbs up/down to a 5 Bag Popcorn rating. A 5 rating means the movie comes with my highest recommendations. This will be a much better rating system.

My goal one day is to be a reviewer for “Rotten Tomatoes”. Your support by following me is appreciated.

See you at the MOVIES!

Blinded by the Light (2019, Gurinder Chadha)

I am going against the critics on this one. I am a big fan of Bruce Springsteen music and was hoping for something better. It was like watching a two hour Springsteen music video marathon for MTV/Much Music sprinkled with a depressing story of life in England in the 80’s for an Asian family. At least it was a happy ending, especially for me that it was finally over.

Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019, Michael Dougherty)

Congrats to the Movie Mill on their 25th Anniversary. I have been a loyal fan of your theatre the whole time. And a big thank you for having movies for $2.50 today (plus 1/2 price popcorn). My grandson Ben and I picked this one, as we had pretty much seen every other film in this theatre. It was a good choice, not only for being a movie that wasn’t sold out and we had lots of seat choices, but it was also entertaining. Thanks to CGI which does a great job of making this flick almost feel real. Just kidding! 🤣 After you see the first “Monster” scene, you have to forget all reality and just enjoy the show. It was good to see Godzilla save the planet…while destroying the entire city of Boston…oh well!!

Hobbs & Shaw (2019, David Leitch)

It was a guys night out at the movies with JayDee and Ben. We waited to see the 10:05 pm movie as Ben had to work. Normally my bed time, but I was prepared for a movie that was action packed enough to keep me from snoozing. Didn’t know this was 137 minute movie 12:30 pm ending (you’ve been warned),but the film did not have me checking the time at all. The car chase scenes were of course totally unbelievable (think of Mario Cart on speed 😂)

After a while you enter into the fantasy… where the good guys, never get shot and have the energy of an Energizer Battery Bunny. Go see this one….but I’d recommend an earlier showing.!!!

The Art of Self Defence (2019, Riley Stearns)

This picture missed Cineplex because of all the block busters. Thanks to the Movie Mill for premiering this for us. I saw this movie in the listing and it had great reviews from Rotten Tomatoes. It really is a dark comedy. It is “The Karate Kid” joins “Fight Club”. Seeing this film with the recent shootings in the States really makes parts of the movie too real! Be warned…. definitely not a kid friendly flick.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019, Quentin Tarantino)

The first half of the movie I was prepared to give this a Thumbs Down review. It was just not going anywhere except in a 60’s car going really fast while listening to a 60’s Hollywood Radio station. Side bar….I really loved the music 🥰. Anyway, going to the home stretch, the movie really redeemed itself. Such an amazing ending. No spoilers from me though. 😉 There is a great cast of actors, but Brad Pitt was the star. If he doesn’t get an Oscar nod, I will be angry. A must see…but be aware of a language warning.

Lion King (2019, Jonathan Favreau)

Before I start my review, can movie goers please take their noisy/fussy kids out of the theatre. It is really getting bad.

I have to agree with the critics on this one. I am a HUGE Lion King Fan. I have watched the cartoon version many times, and have seen the broadway play twice. I had high hopes for this version, but I couldn’t get on board with the supposedly real animals speaking. It was like watching a Wild Kingdom of Africa show with the soundtrack of the original movie. I didn’t “hate” this flick…it just didn’t love it. I would have preferred if they put the broadway play on the big screen.

Late Night (2019, Nisha Ganatra)

I told my wife when I got home from work that it was her turn to pick a movie and I would go with no argument. Fortunately, she chose a film I had wanted to see awhile ago. It was such a let down. So many good actors not putting any effort to make this film worthwhile. All the good parts where in the previews. A major snooze fest but at least I got to enjoy a bag and a half of Movie Mill popcorn!
