Zombieland Double Tap (2019, Ruben Fleischer)

For some reason back in 2009, I don’t even remember the first version of this film hitting the theatres. So seeing the previews this year , I wanted to make sure I saw the “09” version before venturing into the second episode (We all know what happen when I saw the latest John Wick movie without seeing any of the other older ones). Anyway, I was in luck that I could watch the episode 1 on Netflix, so I downloaded it for my red-eye flight to Toronto this week.

I love the first one. I was sorry I had missed it. Having watched the Walking Dead since year one, I am always drawn to a good Zombie flick. From the absurd Shaun of the Dead, to the serious World War Z, the “undead” give me the shivers. Especially in Zombieland, where the buggers, run really fast.

It was a treat to go to the first night showing in Toronto with Paul and Ronnie. It really helped seeing the first one, as this one carried on with the story and same characters. The having to drive a “mini-van” and “Bill Murray” tie-over are big examples.

So if you saw the first one and loved it, you will really get your popcorn money on this years version.

Gemini (2019, Ang Lee)

I have always loved a good Will Smith action movie (like 1998 Armageddon). The plot of being faced with your younger self was really a draw. Thanks to todays technology they were able to pull the story off with Will playing both ages. (mind you, for a guy in his 50’s Smith looks as good as his younger version).

The ratio of action scenes to boring dialogue was more in favour of yakity yak. It wasn’t a horrible movie, but not that great either. And my rating is reflective… I’d wait till it hit the Movie Mill or Netflix.

Joker (2019, Todd Phillips)

Wow! It is hard to believe that this is how the Joker I knew from growing up on the Batman TV series, (played by Cesar Romeo with Batman, Adam West ) came to be.

I remember the TV character being so crazy!! He has also been portrayed in more recent films in a similar fashion. Tonight, in this very dark look into his past, it finally makes sense on how he came to be. This is not a happy movie. And another movie with crazy clowns this year has made me permanently afraid of them for life.

Joaquin Phoenix was amazing in this role. Although, at times I thought he was really getting into his character too much. I hope he doesn’t end up the same way Heath Ledger did after playing the same role. I do hope Phoenix gets an Oscar nod for his performance.

I am giving full marks for this film.

Ad Astra (2019, James Gray)

I was anxious to see a good space movie as it has been a while since a showing of Star Trek or Star Wars. It also starred Brad Pitt, who if you have been reading my reviews, was fantastic in “Once upon a time in Hollywood”.

Unfortunately this movie was terrible. While it had some resemblance to 2001 A Space Odyseey, the plot in this flick was was so dull and painful. There were so many disconnects that made the movie so confusing. The acting (sorry Brad Pitt) was horrible.

Thanks Scene Points Rewards for allowing us to see a flic for half point redemption night, but we really picked the wrong movie tonight. I want my Scene Points back!!!!!!

Downton Abby (2019, Michael Engler)

My wife and I were addicted to this TV series and were anxious to see it continued on the big screen (especially since we watched most of the series in our motor home little 21” TV). We even made sure we had reserved seats.

The movie picked up where it left us 4 years ago. If you have never seen the TV series, the movie will not have the same impact that it had on us. There were several story lines happening along with the major plot of the King (George the 5th) and Queen of England coming to Downton. The movie was intermingled with witty and very funny comments from the fantastic Dowager Countess such as “”At my age, one must ration one’s excitement.” or “Principles are like prayers: Noble of course, but awkward at a party.”

I really did not want this movie to end…although my bladder was happy it was over. If you were ever a fan of the TV show this is a must see.

The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019,Tyler Nilson)

This movie certainly did not get all the hype of a Hollywood blockbuster and I only came to know about it from Movie Mill previews. We wanted to see it when it arrived and was even more anxious to see it after Heather and Jaydee gave us raving reviews.

I loved this movie!! One of the first movies in a long time that I am giving 5 full bags of popcorn. The story of a drifter and a Down Syndrome young adult holds you right to the end without any dull moments. It also brought me back great memories of the time we spent on the US east coast in our RV travels. I want to put this movie with the same classic hits as Of Mice and Men and The Railman. Thanks to the Movie Mill for one “up ing” the Cineplex and bringing this great film to town.

It Chapter 2 (2019, Andres Muschietti)

Finally…a blockbuster we have been waiting for all summer. This was a must see due to my membership in the Stephen King Constant Reader Club. Once again went to the last show at night, and for one who is usually in bed by 10:00pm, this made this movie even more scary.

I would say this flic was like walking through a very scary haunted house for three hours and you can’t get out. I must of jumped a dozen or more times, as Pat will confirm, especially when Pennywise would pop out with his horrifying teeth.

There was lots of comic relief throughout, which in my opinion was necessary to release the a lot of stress of what was going to happen next.

The arch of the young loser club to the present day was amazing. As you can see by this picture – they aged the kids extremely well with great actors.

All in all, I thought the film was great. Seeing S.K. in a big cameo, was a my best scene.

The only fail in the whole movie was how they got rid of that horrible clown. I mean…seriously.. I won’t give it away though. A must see.

Ready or Not (2019,Matt Bettinelli-Oplin)

Three movies in one weekend!!!! With a recommendation from my Grandson Ben, we decided to see this flick. The basic plot line is : new bride marries into a rich family, and as part of her induction on her wedding day into the family , she has to play a pyscho game of Hide and Seek. This led to the creation of Bridezilla like you haven’t seen before. My better half didn’t like this one, but I did. There was plenty of action and what is going to happen next scenes which keeps you going to the last movie line…”What happened…..Inlaws!!!! Not the best movie I’ve seen this year but a memorable one. Four bags of popcorn.

Where’d you go Bernadette (2019 Richard Linklater)

Not a lot of choices this weekend, so looked at the Movie Mill for some possiblities. I thought this movie had an interesting premise. It looked like the daughter was the one that was going to disappear…but it wasn’t. On top of that, it took 3/4 of the movie to even reach the point of anyone disappearing. For me, the movie had a lot of blah blah blah and yada yada yada. Way to0 much talking! The ladies however, really liked it which I think was the target audience. The only redeeming feature of this movie was the fantastic scenes in the Antartica.

Not a bad movie, it just wasn’t one I will even remember in a month from now.

Angel has fallen (2019, Ric Roman Waugh)

Cheap Tuesday ticket night got us out to see this flick. The action started right from the first scene. Most of the film was action, with a sprinkling of “Shawshank Redemption” quotes by the President. Not sure why they try to make these kind of movies with any attempt to serious thought. The “bad guys” were figured out early which allowed you to enjoy the ride till the end. There was a lot of holes in the plot like where the main character actually found a pay-phone. But like most action flicks, you have to ignore any attempt in making it realistic. Nick Nolte added great comic relief……crap that guy got old!!! Not an Oscar winner, but worth a watch. #morganfreemanforpresident2020
